" Parts of Life "
Stones give more
than a sidewalk.
An umbrella
on a pole is not
like a tree.
Some write of earthy things
moss and stalks
of corn perhaps
because they are of
the earth and live
in places where these are
parts of life.
I write of wheels
shopping carts
long city buses with
lights on inside
asphalt and cement
trees that grow from
little circles grated
with iron.
We have a big yard
as yards here go
with lilacs and roses
raspberries sometimes.
A tall maple tree shades
the front of our house
and covers the lawn
with its leaves
in the fall
but these are not
parts of life.
Decoration.
They are simple
ornaments
to make us feel as though
we still can touch
the Real.
